Product Description

The Imgut® Velutina Trap Pro with protective housing is a selective live trap for the Asian hornet Vespa velutina and was developed specifically for use at apiaries. Thanks to its large collection capacity and the surrounding wooden shelter, it is ideal for beekeepers who want to protect their colonies effectively while minimizing harm to the insects.

The trap attracts Asian hornets using an attractant, guides them through an entry funnel into the transparent collection container, and holds them there alive. Bees and other insects can escape through designated openings or be released in a controlled manner, while the European hornet is not trapped due to its size.

Please use exclusively for Vespa velutina (Asian hornet).

Please release other insects and the specially protected Vespa Crabro (European hornet) from the trap, e.g., by cooling it briefly in the refrigerator beforehand.

Place the trap in a shaded area out of direct sunlight and check it daily.

The trap is specifically designed for the live capture of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) to provide targeted protection for bee colonies at the apiary.

Escape openings and mesh sizes allow bees and many other insects to escape. The European hornet is too large for the entrance opening and is generally not trapped.

Ideally, place them near the entrances or slightly below them, with a clear approach path. This way, foraging Vespa velutina wasps will pass through the scent cone of the attractant particularly often.

You can use a specific Velutina attractant or suitable protein- or fruit-based attractants. It’s important to use a fresh scent that is checked regularly and replenished as needed.

Especially during periods of heavy infestation, you should check the trap at least once a day. This ensures that trapped animals are treated in accordance with animal welfare standards and that the attractant works effectively.

Quick Guide – Imgut® Velutina Trap Pro with Shelter

1. Setup

  • Place the trap on a level, secure surface or attach it firmly to a post or wall.
  • Ensure the trap is located near the entrances, but at a safe distance for the beekeeper.

2. Prepare for Assembly

  • Insertthe collection container into the wooden housing and center it.
  • Attachthe entry funnel to the container and check for a tight seal.
  • Make sure the mesh and escape openings are clear and free of debris.

3. Fill with attractant

  • Fillthe attractant container with a suitable Velutina attractant or protein/fruit attractant.
  • Insertthe float to prevent insects from drowning directly in the liquid.
  • Carefully close the lid using the clamping fasteners.

4. Set up the trap

  • Hang the trap at the desired working height with a clear flight path.
  • Check that the entry path is clear and that the collection container is properly seated.

5. Inspection and Maintenance

  • Check the trap daily during the season for catches and to monitor the bait level.
  • Empty the collection container as needed and replace the attractant regularly.
  • Clean the container and mesh with warm water and let them dry thoroughly before reusing.
