Dany’s BienenWohl may only be used once in brood-free colonies.
This veterinary medicinal product should be used as part of an integrated approach to Varroa control and under regular monitoring of mite levels. If possible, the use of this veterinary medicinal product should be alternated with another approved varroacide that has a different mechanism of action to reduce the likelihood that Varroa mites will develop resistance.

Special Precautions for Use in Animals

Do not exceed the recommended dose, and do not administer the veterinary medicinal product more than once. Repeated treatments are not well tolerated by the bees. If worker bees of a single generation are treated more than once, this can result in harm to the bees and a reduction in the strength of the colony.
All colonies in the same apiary should be treated at the same time to prevent reinfestation. Disturbance of the hives should be avoided in the days following treatment.
Dany’s BienenWohl should not be used if honey supers are present.

Special Precautions for the User

This veterinary medicinal product is highly acidic and may cause irritation or chemical burns to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
Oral exposure, including hand-to-mouth contact, must be avoided. Direct contact with the skin and eyes, as well as hand-to-eye contact, must be avoided.
The user should wear personal protective equipment consisting of protective clothing, acid-resistant gloves, and safety goggles.
Wash hands and exposed skin immediately with soap and plenty of water.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or using this veterinary drug.
Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
Used measuring devices and empty containers must be disposed of immediately and properly.
If accidentally ingested, rinse the mouth with water and drink water or milk, but do not induce vomiting. In case of contact with the eyes, rinse the eye thoroughly with water immediately (remove any contact lenses first). Consult a doctor immediately and show the package insert or label to the doctor.

Other Precautions

Dany’s BienenWohl has corrosive properties that can damage corrosion-sensitive parts of beekeeping equipment.
 

Interactions with Other Medications and Other Interactions

None known.
Concomitant use of other acaricides should be avoided, as this may result in increased toxicity to bees.

Overdose (Symptoms, Emergency Measures, Antidotes)

Increased bee mortality was very frequently observed following an overdose. A 53% overdose of the dispersion per treatment led to a temporary, short-term increase in bee mortality. The overdose had no significant long-term effects on colony development, as evidenced by the colonies’ development in the spring.

Side Effects

In clinical studies, increased bee mortality was observed very frequently. This had no impact on the long-term development of the colonies.
The frequency categories for side effects are defined as follows:
- Very common (more than 1 in 10 treated colonies show side effects)
- Common (more than 1 but fewer than 10 out of 100 treated colonies)
- Uncommon (more than 1 but fewer than 10 out of 1,000 treated colonies)
- Rare (more than 1 but fewer than 10 out of 10,000 treated colonies)
- Very rare (fewer than 1 in 10,000 treated colonies, including isolated case reports).

Dosage and Method of Administration

For use in the beehive.

Dosage:
Apply no more than 5 ml to 6 ml of the ready-to-use dispersion per bee-occupied comb section for use in the hive. The total amount of the veterinary medicinal product applied to a single colony should not exceed 54 ml. Therefore, the amount applied per frame row may need to be reduced to ensure that the maximum total amount applied per colony is not exceeded (calculation: maximum dose per colony / number of occupied frame rows = x.x ml/frame row).
The use of Dany’s BienenWohl according to the dosage schedule listed above applies only to hives with vertical Frames that can be accessed from above, as the treatment of bees in other hive types has not been studied.

Instructions for Proper Use:
The veterinary medicinal product should be applied to the bees in the comb channels using a suitable measuring device with appropriate graduations (e.g., automatic pipette, disposable syringe).
Drip the prepared dispersion onto the bees in the comb aisles for use in beehives.
Caution should be exercised when dosing, and overdose should be avoided.
The dispersion should be warm (30° C to 35° C) at the time of application.
The outside temperature should be at least 3°C during treatment with Dany’s BienenWohl.
Apply only once per hive.
If the prepared dispersion has been stored beforehand, shake it vigorously before use.

Preparation of the final dispersion for use in beehives:
Before use, empty the contents of the bag(s) containing the flavored sucrose powder into the bottle containing the solution for preparing the dispersion for use in beehives. Follow these steps:
Place the bottle containing the oxalic acid dihydrate solution in warm (30°C to 35°C) water. Open the bag(s) containing the sucrose powder with scissors.
Preparation of a 444-ml dispersion for use in the beehive: Empty the contents of one bag into the bottle containing 375 g of the oxalic acid dihydrate solution.
Preparation of an 888-ml dispersion for use in the beehive: Empty the contents of two bags into the bottle containing 750 g of the oxalic acid dihydrate solution.
Empty the contents of the sachet(s) completely into the bottle containing the solution.
Seal the bottle tightly and shake it until the sucrose is completely dissolved. The finished dispersion for use in beehives should be a colorless, clear to slightly cloudy dispersion.

Pharmacodynamic Properties
Oxalic acid is an organic acid used to treat infestations with Varroa destructor. No studies on the mechanism of action of oxalic acid are available.
The most important factor contributing to the acaricidal effect is the low pH of the dispersion, as opposed to the volume of dispersion administered. The dispersion acts as a contact poison against Varroa destructor.
The high sugar content in this medication increases the viscosity of the dispersion and thus its adhesion to the bees.

Pharmacokinetic Information
There is evidence that the oxalic acid dihydrate dispersion can penetrate keratin, as the concentration of oxalic acid dihydrate is slightly elevated in all bee tissues for a short time after application.
Oxalic acid dihydrate is distributed among the bees through physical contact and/or the exchange of food from one bee to another (trophallaxis).

Environmental Compatibility

Dany’s BienenWohl must not be allowed to enter water bodies, as it may pose a hazard to fish and other aquatic organisms.

Special Storage Instructions

Store the bottle and pouch in the outer carton to protect the contents from light.
Ready-to-use dispersion for use in beehives (after mixing): Store in the refrigerator (2°C–8°C).
Store separately from food.

Unused veterinary medicinal products or waste materials derived from them must be disposed of in accordance with national regulations.
This veterinary medicinal product must not be allowed to enter water bodies, as it may pose a risk to fish and other aquatic organisms.
