VespaCatch "Select" trap for Asian hornets

Further development of the VespaCatch Original trap. The size of the trap entrances (7 to 11 mm) can be individually adjusted using the adjustment wheel, for more targeted control of the Asian hornet depending on the season. Combined with a grid to prevent drowning and exit holes, the trap offers an environmentally friendly solution that minimizes the impact on other insects.

Consisting of a yellow plastic cup with exit holes, a conical filter, an attractant container, a grid to protect against drowning, a setting wheel for the trap entrance and a black lid with two inlet openings, covered by a tunnel that shields the light, as well as a hanging hook.

Assembly and installation:

Please take a look at the second picture for the correct assembly and sequence of the individual parts.

The size of the entrance hole is adjusted using a wheel:

11 mm: Targets large hornets (Vespa mandarina) and all insects below this diameter (less selective).
10 mm: Targets Vespa orientalis and all hornets below this size.
9 mm: Targets foundresses and workers Vespa velutina for spring trapping.
8 mm: Targets Vespa velunita workers for summer and fall trapping.

As this trap, despite its selectivity, can have an impact on entomofauna, it is recommended to use it only at the most favorable times and to carefully monitor the insects caught.

Hang the trap to isolate it from crawling insects.

Periods for trapping:

Ø From February to May: catch the foundresses.

On apiaries that were heavily affected the previous year: The ideal bait consists of sugar, honey, emetic or even jam.... The following mixture has also proved successful: (1/3 beer - 1/3 white wine - 1/3 syrup)

Ø From July to November :

On hives that have been attacked: In the fall, during the reproductive season, the hornets are looking for proteins, install in the trap a good amount of meat/fish scraps with honey ... Test the "recipe" that works best in your region

We recommend Art. 73606 as an attractant.

Do not hesitate to put out a large amount of bait so that their odors spread better. Leave the hornet carcasses lying around. Renew the bait every 8 to 10 days to keep its odor alive.

Precautions for use:

Do not open the trap in the presence of live insects without protection: freeze the trap for 1 hour or drown it in water to avoid any risk.
Visit your traps regularly to optimize the location and type of bait.
Remove or relocate traps that catch large numbers of insects other than hornets.
The use of insecticides mixed into the bait is strictly prohibited.

Please free other insects and the specially protected Vespa crabro (European hornet) from the trap, e.g. by cooling it down in the refrigerator for a short time beforehand.
