Velutin cones for trap construction

Product Description

The Velutinakegel for trap construction is a specialized accessory for selective live traps against the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina). The cone, made of clear white plastic, is suitable for most common hive systems and helps to specifically protect bee colonies at the apiary. In combination with a matching plexiglass panel and an attractant, it creates a Velutina trap designed for monitoring and live capture.

The cone is mounted in a plexiglass panel that rests on the rebate of a box. Hornets crawl through the Entrance into the hive, follow the funnel upward, and enter the capture chamber. The opening is sized so that Vespa velutina remains inside the trap structure, while bees, native wasps, and bumblebees can escape through queen excluders.

Special features

  • Cone shape for selective trapping with a bottom opening of 185 mm
  • Universally adaptable via Plexiglas panels in hive size
  • Transparent plastic for good visual inspection inside the trap

Advantages

  • Gentle protection of bee colonies against Vespa velutina and Vespa orientalis
  • Selective live capture with significantly reduced bycatch of bees and beneficial insects
  • Easy retrofitting of existing magazine hives with a bottom board, boxes, and queen excluders
  • Easy to handle thanks to low weight and simple cleaning
  • Flexible use at various locations and with different hive systems

Conclusion on the Velutina cone for trap construction

The Velutina cone for trap construction is the right choice for beekeepers who want to specifically protect their bee colonies from the Asian hornet without unnecessarily harming other insects. The combination of a well-designed cone shape, large opening, and universal mounting options in Plexiglas panels creates an effective, selective live trap for the apiary.

Use the Velutin cone to monitor your hives early on and remove Vespa velutina from your bees’ flight path in a controlled manner.

Holtermann Practical Tip: First, set up the trap on a heavily trafficked flight side of your hive and observe for one to two days which insects fly in. This allows you to detect early on whether Vespa velutina is present in the area and to optimize the trap’s selectivity before equipping multiple apiaries.
