Product Description

The Bieno® Plast formic acid evaporator Classic 2-Piece Set is a reusable long-term evaporator for top-bar Varroa treatment. The combination of Classic reservoirs, Classic retrofit kits, and Nassenheider evaporator trays is used upright inside a mounted empty hive body.

The formic acid reaches the non-woven fabric via the wick system and evaporates horizontally over a larger area. Each storage container has a capacity of up to 200 ml and is filled to the 180-ml mark according to these instructions for use.

The 2-piece set serves as a long-term evaporator for the treatment of bee colonies against Varroa mites using formic acid approved for this purpose. The current package insert for the veterinary medication and the evaporator’s instructions must be strictly followed.

The modified horizontal evaporator is placed in its evaporator tray above the Frames. To do this, a matching empty frame is placed on top of the brood chamber.

The storage container has a nominal capacity of 200 ml. According to these instructions for use, it should be filled up to the 180-ml mark, unless the current instructions for the system and veterinary medication being used specify otherwise.

The amount consumed should be checked on the scale after two days. If there are any discrepancies, check the hive’s structure, wick selection, and hive conditions according to the current instructions for use.

Yes, plastic parts and trays can be reused if they are in good condition. U-shaped wicks and non-woven cloths must be inspected before each use and replaced if they are dirty, damaged, or as specified by the manufacturer.

Quick Guide – Bieno® Plast Classic Evaporator, Set of 2

1. Check the evaporator

  • Fill the reservoir completely with water before first use.
  • Place the evaporator horizontally and check for leaks for four hours.
  • The water level in the wick chamber must not rise, and no water should leak out.
  • Use only evaporators that are in perfect working order.

2. Prepare the treatment

  • Read the current package insert for the veterinary medication and the evaporator instructions in their entirety.
  • Remove the honey super before treatment and do not treat during the nectar flow.
  • Close the mesh bottom board according to the instructions and adjust the Entrance to the colony’s size.
  • Have an empty hive body, protective gear, and a bucket of water ready.

3. Assemble the horizontal evaporator

  • Convert the Classic evaporator into a horizontal evaporator using the components from the conversion kit.
  • Insert the appropriate U-shaped wick and a dry non-woven cloth according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Place the evaporator securely and horizontally in the evaporator tray using the feet.

4. Fill and set up

  • Wear acid-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing.
  • Fill the formic acid evaporator slowly with approved formic acid only outdoors.
  • Fill to the 180-ml mark according to these instructions.
  • Position the evaporator pan horizontally above the frames and close the empty hive body.

5. Check the treatment

  • Carefully remove the evaporator after two days and check the amount consumed on the scale.
  • Adjust the wick selection and setup only in accordance with the manufacturer’s current instructions.
  • Adhere strictly to the specified treatment duration and monitor mite fall.

6. After treatment

  • Dispose of any remaining product strictly in accordance with the product instructions and local regulations.
  • Properly clean the evaporator, tray, and reusable parts, and allow them to dry completely.
  • Check the non-woven cloths and U-shaped wicks and replace them if necessary.
  • Store all parts in a dry, protected place and out of the reach of children.
