The Imgut® Ant Barrier for Hives (Set of 4) reliably protects your apiary from ant infestations and is ideal as a hive accessory for outdoor apiaries. Thanks to its sturdy stainless steel construction, the barrier remains durable and weather-resistant.

The mechanism is simple: The lower tray is filled with oil, and above it is a crown board with a surface that rests on the bottom of the hive. Ants cannot cross the oil bath, preventing them from reaching the beehive.

The ant barrier creates a physical barrier using an oil-filled tray. Ants cannot cross the oil, keeping the hive stand and beehive ant-proof.

We recommend neutral vegetable oils such as sunflower or canola oil. They have good fluidity, form a smooth surface, and evaporate more slowly than water.

This spacer is suitable for bee hive stands, hive bottoms, and horizontal hives, as long as the contact surface of the hive base fits the mounting plate and rests securely on it.

The load capacity per leg is approximately 50 kg; with four legs, this is sufficient for a fully stocked beehive with a hive stand, provided the load is distributed evenly.

Check the trays regularly, especially during the nectar flow season. The oil should be replaced at the latest when it becomes dirty or when there is a heavy accumulation of insect remains, to ensure that the ant protection remains effective.

Quick Guide – Imgut® Ant Barrier for Hives (Set of 4)

1. Preparation

  • Place the hive bottom on a level, stable surface.
  • Check that the contact surface of the legs fits the mounting plate of the ant barrier.
  • Check whether grass, etc., can reach the hive bottom and form bridges

2. Installing the Ant Barriers

  • Position each ant barrier with its mounting plate under the leg of the hive bottom.
  • Securely screw them to the hive bottom using appropriate screws until all four legs are firmly in place.

3. Filling with oil

  • Fill the lower tray of the ant barrier with neutral vegetable oil.
  • Place the top crown board so that it hovers about 5 mm above the oil level and the hive bottom rests securely on it.

4. Monitoring During Operation

  • Check regularly to ensure there is enough oil in the trays.
  • Remove dirt, insect remains, and water from the tray, and replace the oil as needed to maintain ant protection.

5. Care and Storage

  • If the unit is not in use for an extended period, remove the oil and clean the parts with warm water.
  • Store ant barriers in a dry place and protect them from heavy soiling.
