ApiDana® Queen Marking Varnish in a 5 ml bottle is a water-based special varnish for marking queen bees in the standard annual colors. With the handy bottle, you can quickly apply a highly visible dot of color to your queen’s thorax to make her easier to find in the hive and keep track of her age.

After securing the queen, the lacquer is applied sparingly to the thorax using the integrated dispensing tip and dries quickly. This allows the marked comb to be returned to the hive promptly without unnecessarily disturbing the queen or the colony.

1. Preparation

  • Shake the bottle well to ensure the marking wax is evenly distributed.
  • Have all necessary marking tools (e.g., marking tube, net, clip) ready.

2. Secure the Queen

  • Carefully remove the comb with the queen from the hive and set it aside securely.
  • Gently secure the queen with a marking tool or net—be careful not to crush her.

3. Apply the color mark

  • Remove the built-in brush from the bottle and wipe off any excess paint on the rim of the bottle.
  • Apply a small dot of paint to the queen’s thorax.

4. Let it dry

  • Wait a few seconds until the dot of paint appears matte and is no longer shiny.
  • Then remove the queen from the drawing tool.

5. Hang the comb back in the hive and store it

  • Carefully hang the comb with the marked queen back into the hive.
  • Seal the bottle tightly and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
