With the brood-stop top bar cage, the queen is caged for 24 days in the summer after the second Honey Harvest to make the colony brood-free. Residual mite control with oxalic acid or lactic acid can then be performed as well.

A second application is caging the queen in the fall/winter to ensure a brood-free period. This is intended to help the bees enter winter dormancy, reduce foraging flights, and, due to the absence of brood, minimize the development of Varroa mites. The sloped design allows the bee cluster to gather around the queen in winter. Caging in winter should only be used for single-chamber colonies.

To prevent wild comb building, the wood is 10 mm thick; the queen is released through an exit near the top bar.
