The diversity of flora and fauna and the health of the planet depend to a large extent on bees, but the extinction of honey bees is now taking on threatening proportions. Intensive farming, monocultures, pesticides and genetically modified plants are threatening their lives. Wolfgang Voigt repeatedly emphasizes the direct link to the forest ants, which are also extremely useful insectivores that depend on appropriate biomass. Forests and avenues should be preserved and maintained, and windbreaks should be designed as ecological barriers.
