Special warnings for each target species

Treat all colonies in an apiary at the same time to prevent robbing. The veterinary medicinal product should be applied at maximum daily temperatures of over 14 °C to ensure sufficient efficacy. The veterinary medicinal product should be used as part of an integrated control program against Varroa mites and the mite decline should be monitored regularly. The use of different active substances from other substance classes over the course of the year reduces the risk of resistance development. Please note that the veterinary medicinal product has corrosive properties on corrosion-sensitive metal parts.

Special precautions for use in animals

Ensure adequate ventilation during treatment. Open the flight opening to at least 15 cm2. Remove all obstacles in front of and behind the flight opening. High acid concentrations can lead to beard formation in front of the Entrance. In this case, reduce the evaporation rate of the evaporator and create a 2 cm high opening across the entire width of the hive to reduce the acid concentration in the hive. Follow the instructions for use of the evaporator exactly. Do not disturb colonies during treatment. For safety reasons, the veterinary medicinal product should be used at maximum daily temperatures below 30 °C.

Special precautions for the user

The veterinary medicinal product is corrosive due to its corrosive properties. Do not swallow and avoid ingestion via hand-to-mouth contact. Avoid skin contact and eye contact, also via hand to eye, do not inhale vapors. Personal protective equipment consisting of protective clothing, acid resistant gloves, goggles and half or full face respirator with type B or E filters should be worn while handling the veterinary product or cleaning the evaporator. Remove heavily contaminated clothing as soon as possible and wash it before wearing it again. Do not eat or drink during handling and application. Wash hands with soap immediately after use.
If accidentally swallowed, rinse mouth and drink plenty of water, do not induce vomiting. In case of accidental skin contact, wash affected area immediately with water. In case of accidental eye contact, rinse immediately with water for several minutes, remove contact lenses. In case of accidental inhalation, move to fresh air and breathe calmly. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor and show the label or package leaflet.
Keep children away during use. Dispose of empty packaging immediately in accordance with regulations and keep out of sight and reach of children.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other interactions

Do not use at the same time as other acaricides.

Warnings

FORMIVAR (formic acid) 60 % ad us. vet. must not get into the hands of children. The solution causes burns. Do not inhale vapors. In case of contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice. In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately.

Overdosage (symptoms, emergency measures, antidotes)

A higher dose can lead to excessive brood loss, bee mortality, loss of internal colony and/or swarming. Two weeks after treatment, the colonies should be checked for queening.
If higher than normal bee mortality (more than 3 jars [1 jar = 240 ml]) or restlessness in the colony is observed in the first three days (long-term treatment) or hours (short-term treatment), this may be due to overdosing. The evaporation rate of the evaporator must be reduced and ventilation improved by maximizing the opening of the Entrance.

Do not use at daytime temperatures outside the specified range (14-30 °C).

Side effects

Increased bee mortality may be observed in the first three days (long-term treatment) or the first few hours (short-term treatment) (more than three jars [1 jar = 240 ml = 600 bees]) Colony loss is rare, less than 10 out of 10,000 treated colonies.
After application of the veterinary medicinal product, brood damage may occur to open and closed brood and to hatching bees. Queen losses have been observed more frequently with short-term treatments or incorrect handling of the evaporator. Queen losses occur occasionally, less than 10 in 1000 treated colonies.
If you notice any side effects in your bees, especially those not listed in the package leaflet, or if you suspect that the veterinary medicinal product has not worked, please report this to your veterinarian or pharmacist.

Dosage for each species, type and duration of application

Do not drip or spray liquid formic acid on bees.
The solution for use in the hive should be applied with a suitable evaporator (e.g. Liebig evaporator or Naßenheider professional) usually on the brood combs. The quantity used depends on the evaporator and the duration of treatment. The solution should be at room temperature during application.
During long-term treatment, the solution should evaporate evenly in a small dose. For a treatment of 7-10 days, the quantity should not exceed 300 ml. The daily dose is 15-20 ml per day for single-celled hives with a volume of 35-45 l (e.g. DNM, National, Simplex, Swiss box, Zander) and 30-40 ml per day for large or double-celled hives with a volume of 50-80 l (e.g. AZ hive, Dadant, 2.x DNM, 2.x Simplex, 2.x Zander). It is recommended to repeat the treatment within 4 weeks after the first treatment if the natural mite drop is more than 5 mites per day.
Follow the recommendations of the local bee institute regarding dosage and evaporator for correct application as part of the local integrated Varroa Treatment program and use good beekeeping practice with different Varroa Treatment products throughout the year.
For short term treatment (shock treatment) apply 3 ml per comb on a sponge cloth. The sponge cloth is placed on or under the brood combs. The formic acid evaporates within 6-10 hours. After 3-4 days, repeat the treatment once to a maximum of 4 times. Wash out and dry the sponge cloth immediately after treatment.

Method and duration of application

The formic acid is applied to the bee colonies using suitable applicators (evaporation aids).
The special feature of this form of application is the continuous evaporation of low doses per time unit over a longer period of time. The evaporation of formic acid in the bee colony must take place with the highest possible uniformity over a period of 10 days.
