The queen is caged for 24 days in the summer after the second Honey Harvest with the brood stop grid frame to ensure the colony is brood-free. Residual mite removal with oxalic acid or lactic acid can now also be carried out.

A second option is to cage the queen in the fall/winter for a brood-free period. This should help the bees to go into hibernation, to fly out less and to reduce the number of Varroa mites due to the lack of brood. Caging in winter should only be used for single-room colonies.
