Imgut Multihive made of EPS: Expanded Polystyrene

Rigid foam made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a plastic that, thanks to its versatile properties, is ideally suited for the manufacture of beehives and has proven itself in beekeeping practice for decades.

Material Properties ofthe Imgut Multihive

  • Lightweight and sturdy: for easy handling and beekeeping that’s easy on the joints
  • Weather-resistant: durable and stable in all weather conditions
  • Insulating: The material’s insulating properties protect the interior from external weather conditions and help the bees regulate the temperature inside the hive
  • HBCD-free: our material is free of HBCD, a flame-retardant additive considered harmful to health

Good to Know

Hive components made of rigid foam shrink by up to one percent within the first year after production. With an outer dimension of 50 cm, that amounts to half a centimeter. Most of the shrinkage occurs in our warehouse and is not always fully complete at the time of delivery. Therefore, frames in “new” boxes have a larger contact surface area than in older ones.

Cleaning and Care

Care

The hive components, made entirely of rigid foam, are shipped in their natural white color. We recommend applying an exterior coat of paint, for example, for camouflage purposes. You can use Beehive Paint forStyropor hives for this purpose. An additional protective coating is not necessary. To clean them, simply scrape the rigid foam walls with a hive tool. All hive components can be disinfected with hot caustic soda solution.

Repair

If a Styropor® hive is damaged—for example, by storms or during routine beekeeping activities—you can easily repair it using our repair kits forStyropor® hives.
